Every child is a public speaker at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Primary School Kingsgrove.
This is after all 440 students, from Kindergarten to Year 6, took part in the school’s first public speaking competition, “Speak Up.”
School assistant principal, Margrita Cutrupi, wanted every child to be able to speak confidently and clearly in front of an audience, so she came up with the idea of a competition.
“Public speaking promotes confidence in the children to communicate their ideas clearly and concisely,” Mrs Cutrupi said. “It has been a great program for the school because every child was given the chance to shine and excel.”
Students were offered a choice of topics, ranging from “The Coolest Toy I Have” to “Mythical Creatures – Would They Make Good Pets?”, to present in front of their peers.
Round 1 saw the children present a prepared speech to their classmates. Winners from this round then went on to Round 2, where they were asked to deliver an impromptu speech.
The final round was adjudicated by a panel of judges. Among them was St Ursula’s Catholic College principal, Mary Leask, who afterwards spoke glowingly of everyone’s confidence.
Our Lady of Fatima principal, Anthony Weir, remarked that taking part in the competition had improved students’ grasp of English.
